The grade of Incomplete (I) may be assigned when a student’s work is of passing quality and represents a significant portion of the requirements for a final grade, but is incomplete for a good cause as determined by the instructor. An I grade must be replaced with a letter grade (or P or S grade) before the end of the third succeeding quarter (excluding summer sessions) of the student’s academic residence, or the grade will revert to an F (or NP or U). Use this petition to request an extension this deadline.

Policies

• A student is given three (3) terms in academic residence to complete an incomplete grade before it turns into an F. Residence is defined in detail inUC Davis regulation 610, but can generally be considered 3 terms in which the student is registered for at least 6 units of coursework.
• You must work with the instructor of the course to complete the I grade. If the instructor is not currently teaching at UC Davis, the student should work with the department/program chair.
• Many colleges will only allow one extension per student, not per course.

Completing the Form

1. Select the course and term with the I grade that you wish extend the deadline for. Only courses with I grades are options.
2. Select the term you wish to extend the deadline to. You will have until the LAST DAY of that particular term to complete the course.
3. Explain why you were unable to meet the original deadline and describe any hardship involved.

4. You can upload any supporting documentation, for example a letter from your doctor if your reason is medical in nature. (Attachments should be one of: pdf, tiff, jpg, png, Word (doc, docx), Excel (xls, xlsx), txt)
   1. Click "Browse" to select the file.
   2. Enter an optional title for the file.
   3. Use the + button to add additional attachments.
   4. Use the X to delete an attachment.

5. Submit your form. This is equivalent to digitally signing the form and turning it in. If you have started filling out the form, but are not yet ready to submit it, you can save a draft that you can later return to complete.
